After trying to sew something too thick (Pfaff 1222), my thread was creating large loops on the bottom. So, I rethreaded and changed the needle and still the loops, and then I noticed when I put the needle down to bring up the bobbin thread, the top thread was getting caught on something. If I yank it, it comes up, but there's a dent in the thread. I took off the plate and feed dogs, and I think it's getting caught in the rotary hook somewhere. Don't know what I did, or how to fix, so any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated, before I take it for repair. |

Not really sure, what that might be. Sounds like the heaviness of the material caused a thread jam, and that in turn caused the timing to be out, in which case you'll have a trip to the repairman. First get an old stocking, and very gently rub it over all the surfaces around the bobbin area to see if you have a burr somewhere. That could be rubbed smooth with a very fine emery board. Does the machine actually still sew? I would try with ordinary thread and ordinary medium weight material first. What size needle did you use on the heavy stuff, I would think it'd have to be a large (14) needle, or even a leather needle to pierce thick layers and form proper loops.Let us know what happens. Oil the hook real well and be sure that you turn the wheel backwards (yes....backwards [this unjams anything that might be in there]) and then wipe it down and let the machine run with the bobbin cover closed and no thread in the machine. This will help clean that hook area. Then clean the tensions by gentle drawing unwaxed dental floss thru the tension disks on both sides. You can open up the machine to see if you have done it, but if you aren't one to disassemble the machine, then shine a strong light down in there to be sure the tension disks don't have anything caught in them. Also check the entire threading assembly to be sure there is not something in there. Usually loops underneath indicate problems with the tension, but if you feel something getting caught in the bottom, then you should check for burrs as Marlis suggests. If you are using a heavy thread like a 12 wt. then you should be using a size 100 (16) needle. The 1222 is a great workhorse machine and hopefully a total cleaning and reassembly and smoothing will put you back on the right path. Let us know how you are doing. ![]() |

Thanks to you both for your help. I was using a size 16 needle and regular Gutermann poly thread. I knew this was too thick and shouldn't have attempted it. I had to manually turn the wheel just to get the needle thru, sewed only a couple inches, then the needle got stuck and I had to pull it out with pliers. This is probably when it got messed up. Then I took it out and saw the loops. I did oil the hook afterwards, rethreaded, etc. and tried with regular fabric. So, let me try your suggestions and I'll let you know if I have any luck! Thanks |

For anyone that's interested, I FINALLY fixed it! Yeah! After spending way too much time searching and reading, I finally found the answer. Seems I just got the tension off balance. First, I loosened the bobbin tension a bit, then I got a long piece of fabric and just kept sewing while gradually tightening the tension, till the loops finally went away. The thread also pulls out easily, now. What a simple fix I was beginning to think I was in for a huge repair bill Yippee!! ![]() |
